What You Will Learn

The content of this advanced seminar includes more complex topics than are covered in our Basic Computer Forensic Class. It also provides more technical background for processes which were introduced in the basic class. A deeper theoretical understanding enhances the forensic examiner's ability to explain his procedures and results.

There is also more hands-on work and practical exercises, designed to enhance your expertise and versatility as a computer forensics examiner.

Some of the covered topics include the following:

  • Search and seizure: Search Warrant wording; legal review of preserving disk evidence; federal/state statutes
  • Learning how to defend and explain your procedures and actions
  • Hardware identification; hard drive access (INT13)
  • Using a disk editor; physical drive structures
  • DOS boot sequence and creating forensic boot disks; Windows NT 95 and 98 overview; partitions and disk partitioning software
  • Manual deleting and undeleting files
  • In-depth command line usage and designing complicated script (batch) files; automating the seizure process
  • Forensic processing and practical hands-on for imaging/copying procedures; creating your work copies
  • Hashing techniques; disk cataloging; software and process validation
  • Key word (string) searching
